What is YKA? → Our goals
In sustainable careers, the work does not make people ill, employees develop their skills, and good management supports profitability. That is why it is our most important job as a union to build a working life that fits life:
Only 60 percent of employees get enough support from their manager. The manager can have a greater impact on an employee’s mental health than their doctor or therapist – and as much of an impact as their spouse. This is why both the quality of management and the managers’ coping and resources are key. The Finnish Government and those wielding power in the world of work should be interested in developing Finnish people’s management skills.
Burnout is common and often repeats: more than one in four have experienced burnout twice, and for one in seven it comes back two or three times. The most effective way to prevent burnout is through sufficient resources and by ensuring good management. We must invest in recovery: everyone must have the right to annual leave, but there also needs to be sufficient recovery every week and every day.
More than three quarters of Akava-members feel like they need to update their skills. The world of work is changing ever faster, and it has become more important than ever to upskill during our careers: without skilled workers there can be no productivity.
So we need more ambition for increasing the national skill level and make it easy for all, including those who are unemployed or temporarily laid off, to update their skills.
